Not all back pain is the same, which means treatment shouldn’t be the same either. While that may seem like common sense, research is now backing it up. A study published in the UK highlighted the value of targeted, individualized care for back-pain patients.
In the study, researchers divided participants into two groups: one received targeted treatment, and the other received standard, non-targeted care. Patients in the targeted-care group were evaluated based on their risk level, then provided with a tailored combination of physical and psychological support depending on their needs.
The results were significant. Compared to the non-targeted group, patients receiving targeted care reported fewer missed workdays, better physical and emotional functioning, improved quality of life, and reduced disability caused by back pain. They also experienced economic benefits by avoiding unnecessary treatments or medical visits.
Researchers concluded that without proper screening, many medium- and high-risk patients may be missing out on the specialized care that could meaningfully improve their outcomes.
